Village Steering Committee
Meeting Minutes
March 9, 2009
Members Present: Brian Busier, George Dameron, Rolf Kielman, Aaron Kimball
Members Absent: Karla Munson, Dona Walker, one seat vacant
Guest Present: Rocky Martin, Director of Buildings & Facilities
Meeting called to order at 7:07 p.m. - Town Hall
1) Rocky gave presentation updating the VSC on the progress of the sidewalk project from the Charlotte Road to the Hinesburg Community School (HCS). This presentation also included a discussion of the work to be done at Silver Street and Main Street (Route 116). Rocky shared with the group sketch plans for the project. Of note, plans call for a right turn lane on Main Street heading South to turn onto Silver Street. Some right-of-way issues are still being worked out with property owners. No major obstacles are anticipated to have to overcome in order to get this project completed by Fall 2010.
Rocky also shared with the group plans that are being discussed for an addition to the Hinesburg Fire Station. This addition will allow Police and Fire/Rescue services to be housed under one roof. Plans are still very much preliminary at this point. Some discussion about what to do with the current Police station building was had. If the building was to be preserved would it stay at its current location or be moved? What could the building be used for? etc... It was expressed that the building (no matter who is using it) does provide a key visual architectural entry point to the town village from the North in its current location. As this area is being developed Rocky is looking at the area as a whole (the current site of the police and fire stations, the water plant station, and the vacant lot behind - in front of Creekside) and trying to formulate a best use for the area as a whole. Rocky will begin seeking out names of interested people to serve an advisory role on a to-be-formed town board to help plan for this site.
2) January 2009 minutes approved
3) Recently two letters were written by the VSC to Select Board. As of now there has been no response from the Select Board. It is unknown if the Select Board has even received the letters. RK will resend them. The two letters talk about Truck Traffic in the Village and Village Sidewalk and Crosswalk Priority List Recommendations.
4) Town Hall Clock update. RK and KM to visit the Lion's Club for discussions as to how to to best more forward on the idea.
5) Village Sign update. Last VSC meeting RK shared with the group a "Welcome To Hinesburg" sign that used a 2-post design. He came back to the committee this month with an improved sign design idea that uses only 1-post. He shared with the group. Sign design still under consideration. A proposal to have several 1-post style signs priced-out was suggested.
6) Saputo site update. RK serves on the Saputo Redevelopment Steering Committee. He very briefly shared with the VSC some of the preliminary organizational-procedural-startup committee conversations that the group is now having. RK feels that there is a good mix of voices and talents on the SRSC. He is confident that the committee can contribute in a positive manner towards moving forwards with the property.
7) Village history tour update. Another interested person has contacted AK and GD about helping out with this project. A June planning meeting is tentatively scheduled.
8) VSC vacancy. Looking to fill a vacant seat on the VSC. Perhaps a Creekside resident? A person from NRG or other business in town? Members will reach out to folks they know and extend invitations.
9) Started conversation to review our goals as originally outlined by the Select board. More to come at upcoming meetings.
Meeting adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
next meeting: 4/13/09
Respectfully submitted,
Aaron Kimball, VSC Secretary
