Hinesburg Trails Committee

Meeting Minutes

May 19, 2010

Present: Cathy Ryan, Lenore Budd, Luana Lagasse, Colin McNaull, Stew Pierson, Michelle Fisher, Jason Reed

Unable to attend: Greg LeRoy and Jane Sheldon

1)Minutes of the April meeting were approved

2)Treasury: $484 remaining. This balance can not be carried over into the next fiscal year which begins on July 1st.

3) Hinesburg Record articles:

June 4: Colin

August 4: Jason

Sept 4: Lenore

Oct 4: Stew

4) National Trails Day on Saturday June 5th:

Agreement that two trail walks would be led:

Cathy: The Russell and new Thistle Hill trails (at10am): meet behind baseball backstop by Lantmanns

Lenore: LaPlatte Headwaters: focus on birds and other wildlife: Meet at 8 am in Gilman Road parking area

Possible work project:

Jason: repair and upgrade a section of Russell Trail (east side north of the fenced meadow). Jason will attempt to set this up with Howdie Russell.

Follow up news: this is not working out with the Russells.

Possible: FOTW workshop: information to follow.

Information follow up: we are invited to attend these workshops but this would be for a limited group like the 9 of us…not part of the general program

Publicity:

Stew: contact Jeannie Wilson (Front Porch Forums)

Michelle: create a poster to be spread about (can this be completed by Thursday May 27 or sooner?).

5) budget balance plans: Deputize Jason to spend up to $300 to purchase trail building tools and pressure treated lumber for future bridge work.

Suggest that he check with Rocky Martin. Town may already own all this and might permit our using it.

Follow up news from Rocky: Trails should get its own set of tools and arrange for their storage.

6) Trail Easement Form and Trail license for use form: Lenore is working on this. Suggestion that the Planning office might already have something on easements. Joe Fallon has a formula for "licensing" which we used on Copp Welsh.

7) EAGLE TRAIL: Agreement that Mike Snyder's permission be sought for "marking" the Eagle Trail as we walked and flagged it three weeks ago. These markers should be removable. Colin has 200 markers which sound excellent. (Stewart to contact Mike)

8) MAJOR SIGNAGE (for trail heads) agreement that a consistent format be adopted for these signs which would include the HART logo. Each trail head sign will need to include acknowledgments of the various organizations which made them possible (so it will be impossible to have a totally consistent sign). It is hoped that program to construct these signs can take place before the year's end.

9) TOWN FOREST to FRED JOHNSON AND HOLLOW ROAD: FOTW was completed bike trails connecting TOWN FOREST (preacher trail) with Hollow Road. There is also a VAST trail in this area. Dual of this FOTW trail by hikers as well as bikers is assumed. What has not been yet accomplished is land owner permission to put these on the town trail map. FOTW has its own maps (which includes these) but Trails Committee hopes they might be added to the Town map. Colin and Lenore have met with one representative of the Carse family, but others need to be consulted and have been written).

10) EAST SHORE trespassing: There is no progress to report. Hinesburg Community Police are willing to cooperate. Redirecting the CVU cross country team is easily done and should be by the affected land owners.

11) Selection of officers:

Chair: Stewart Pierson

Vice chair: Cathy Ryan

Sec: Lenore Budd.

WITH DEEP THANKS TO COLIN FOR TWO YEARS OF ENERGETIC AND ENJOYABLE LEADERSHIP

Respectfully,

Stewart
