Joint Meeting with the Recreation Commission
VSC Members Present: George Dameron, Rolf Kielman, Aaron Kimball, Karla Munson, Jane Starkweather, Dona Walker, Brian Busier
Recreation Commission: Michael Bissonette, Tom Giroux, Carrie Harlow, Frank Twarog, Jennifer McCuin
Meeting called to order by Frank Twarog at 7:05 PM
Frank summarized some of the work the recreation commission has been doing to identify. plan, and create recreation space town.
Rolf summarized the purpose of the VSC. Who we are. What we do. Buildings, open space, advocate for pedestrian circulation and safety. Core village along with the expanded growth areas.
Open spaces in the village that are potential for developing: Monument Park at Silver Street, Lot 1 behind the police station, Lot 15 behind the post office, etc. How might they be used? how are they best suited. playing fields, town green, a bandstand.
Frank talked about the value and purpose of trail and open space needed in the town.
George asked if there was a proper formula or number that exists for a town of our size for open space. He talked the need for long term planning to make spaces happen and well as the continuing importance of a town green.
Rolf talked about what different sites in town that have been identified are best used for. i.e. don't put the bandstand next to Route 116 due to noise issues, farmer's market might be more successful if closer to Route 116.
Brian spoke about some of the financial opportunities that might be looked at in order to more forward with some of the recreation projects that the town wants.
Frank talks about how other towns have gone about acquiring their recreation space. Frank talked about what Hinesburg needs in terms of size for recreation space.
Michael spoke of the need for having both a short term and long term plan for creating recreation opportunities. Focus is needed to address a path forward.
Frank spoke of the importance of how we more forward in the process. He stressed the importance of opportunities lost now are gone for the future.
Frank spoke of what resources are available to site and build a proper space. One space that was discussed was the are to the west of Creekside near the future West side road.
